Privacy Policy

This policy describes the information handled by Anyshelf (the “app”), an app for iPhone and iPad, and how it is handled. The app is provided by nogism (the “developer”).

Principles

  • The app has no accounts and no sign-in.
  • The app uses no advertising, no tracking and no third-party analytics.
  • The book files you open in the app, and their contents, are never sent to the developer.
  • Information reaches the developer only when you press Send in “Report a Problem”.

Information stored on your device

To provide its features, the app stores the following on your device. None of it is sent to the developer.

  • Reading state (position, progress, last opened date), history, favorites, bookmarks, notes and per-book display settings
  • Shelf and location settings, cover and page thumbnails, downloaded book files and caches
  • App settings, profile settings and reading-time records
  • An activity log (diagnostic log) of things like how long operations took and error codes. It contains no book titles, file names, paths, server names or user names. Older entries are removed once it reaches a fixed size, and it is excluded from backups.

iCloud sync

If you turn on “iCloud sync” in Settings, your reading state, history, favorites, bookmarks (including notes, excerpts and small page images), cover images, shelf and location settings (including NAS host names and user names), profiles, app settings and reading-time records are stored in your own iCloud (Apple’s CloudKit private database) and synced between devices signed in to the same Apple Account.

  • This data is kept in your iCloud account. The developer cannot see it.
  • Book files themselves are not synced by the app. Files you place in the Anyshelf folder in iCloud Drive are synced by iOS’s iCloud Drive.
  • While sync is on, NAS passwords are stored in iCloud Keychain. While it is off, they are stored only in the keychain on your device.

Connecting to a NAS

The app connects directly from your device to the NAS servers (SMB, WebDAV) you register, to list and read your book files. It uses only the servers and credentials you set up, and nothing passes through the developer’s servers. To find NAS servers, the app searches your local network (Bonjour).

Information sent when you report a problem

Only when you press Send on the Settings › About › “Report a Problem” screen, the following is sent to the developer.

  • What you type: the description of the problem and, optionally, a contact e-mail address
  • App and device information: app version, OS version and device model
  • The activity log: app settings, how long operations took, error codes, device state (free storage, memory size, network type, language and region settings, time-zone offset, and so on), the number of locations of each kind, and whether a purchase has been made
  • Diagnostics for crashes, hangs and similar events provided by iOS (MetricKit)

Book titles, file names, paths, server names, user names and passwords are never sent. Where the log needs to tell books or locations apart, it records only an irreversible identifier derived with a value unique to your device.

How reports are sent and stored

  • Reports are encrypted on your device so that only the developer can decrypt them. Reports are received using services of Cloudflare, Inc.
  • If sending fails, the encrypted report is kept on your device and sent again automatically later. A report that could not be sent within 7 days is deleted.
  • To prevent abuse, an irreversible value derived from the sender’s IP address is recorded with the report. The IP address itself is not stored.
  • Apple’s App Attest is used to confirm that a report was sent by the app.
  • Received reports are deleted automatically 180 days after receipt. The developer is notified of each report by e-mail, and that notification is kept for as long as needed to answer your inquiry.

Purpose

Report contents are used only to investigate and fix problems, to improve the app, and to reply to you if you entered an e-mail address.

Purchases

In-app purchases are processed by Apple. The developer never receives your credit card or other payment details. Purchase status is checked on your device. A record of your free uses is kept in the keychain on your device and may remain after the app is deleted.

Permissions

The app asks for the following permissions when a feature needs them. You can change them at any time in iOS Settings.

  • Local Network: to find and connect to NAS servers
  • Face ID, Touch ID or passcode: to unlock locked profiles. Biometric data is handled by iOS and is never available to the app.
  • Add to Photos: to save a page you choose to your photo library. The app does not read your photo library.
  • Notifications: to let you know when downloads and similar tasks finish

Sharing with third parties

The developer does not share your information with third parties, except as required by law. Report reception and storage use services of Cloudflare, Inc., and sync and purchases use Apple’s services; their own privacy policies apply.

Deleting your data

  • You can delete data on your device with “Reset This Device’s Data” in Settings. If iCloud sync is on, synced data will be loaded again from iCloud.
  • Deleting the app deletes its data on your device. Items stored in the keychain may remain.
  • Data stored in iCloud can be deleted in iOS Settings › your name › iCloud › Manage Account Storage.
  • To have a report you sent deleted, contact us with the Report ID shown after sending.

Children’s privacy

The app has no accounts and never asks for your age or for information that identifies you. Apart from an e-mail address you choose to enter, it collects no information that identifies any user, including children.

Changes to this policy

This policy may be revised as needed. Significant changes will be announced on this page.

Contact

For questions about this policy, please send a report from Settings › About › “Report a Problem” in the app (recommended), or use the support contact shown on the app’s App Store page. See the Support page for details.
